UNDER ARMOUR® COLDGEAR® MOCK

HELPS ATHLETES AVOID SEASONAL SPORTING SHIVERS

Performance sports brand unveils 2009 ColdGear baselayer range

Temperature-sensitive website helps athletes crush the cold with UA ColdGear

www.underarmour.com/baselayer

London, England (November, 6 2009):  Under Armour, Inc., the originator of performance apparel and accessories, unveils its autumn/winter campaign to promote its pioneering baselayer, the ColdGear Mock.

Under Armour’s ColdGear Mock achieves the impossible by keeping athletes warm without weighing them down.  It is a revolutionary thermal baselayer that features a double-sided fabric that wicks moisture from the skin, circulates body heat and controls odour by preventing the growth of odour causing microbes.

The Mock is available in two fits: Compression is Under Armour’s signature "second skin" fit – a tight fit that promote muscle performance and fast recovery.  Fitted provides warmth without the squeeze – the Mock sits right next to the skin without compression.

To promote the ColdGear Mock, Under Armour engaged digital creative agency Perfect Fools to create a temperature-sensitive website which includes a Weather Watch Barometer that monitors a user’s local temperature and changes the site’s ‘skin’ to reflect how cold it is outside.

Peter Maher, President, Under Armour Europe, said: “The ColdGear Mock is Under Armour’s signature performance sportswear.  Athletes of all disciplines rely on our ColdGear to perform at the top of their game; they know that UA ColdGear is the only baselayer that really keeps them warm when it’s cold.  The new temperature sensitive website reacts to real-time weather to highlight the perfect conditions for maximum benefits from a ColdGear Mock.”

When the temperature drops below 13 degrees Celsius – the ideal temperature to wear an Under Armour Mock – it is officially ColdGear weather. The content- and visually-rich website gives detailed product information, a fit guide, and is linked to Under Armour’s e-commerce store.

The website will be promoted in the UK through an integrated social media, blogger outreach, and Facebook Ad campaign created and implemented by Renegade Media, the digital PR and marketing agency.

Lindsey Vonn, World Cup Skiing Champion, said: “It can be freezing on the mountain so I need to stay warm, but I still need to be fast if I am going to break records.  Under Armour ColdGear is great for me because it’s just one lightweight, non-bulky layer and it keeps me warm so I can concentrate on going for Gold.”

Background information and technical details--
  • So what is ColdGear?

COLDGEAR® PRODUCT INFORMATION:

Temperature Control

  • 7 ounce fabric retains enough heat to keep the wearer warm, but not overheated during extreme activity.
  • Unique double knit construction results in a thin, warm, and dry microclimate next to the skin.
  • Tight knit nylon face for extreme durability and reduced air permeability
  • Twill lofted polyester back moves moisture to the surface of the fabric while trapping body heat
  • Warmth without weight: Stay warm with a minimal amount of bulk. Less distraction leads to better performance.

Unique features such as 7oz fabric and double knit construction create a microclimate next to the skin which keeps the wearer warm but not overheated during extreme activity.  Tightly knit nylon face and twill lofted polyester back combine to offer durability, reduced air permeability, and the ability to move moisture away from skin to the fabric surface while trapping body heat.  Result:  the wearer stays warm and dry with minimal bulk.

Moisture Management:

  • Push/Pull moisture transport: A hydrophobic brushed polyester inner fabric pushes moisture to a nylon exterior which pulls it to the surface, where it spreads out and evaporates.
  • Compression fit allows it to interface immediately with all perspiration—it moves moisture immediately off the body – regulating your core temperature.

Hydrophobic polyester fabric pushes moisture away from the skin’s surface toward hydrophilic nylon fabric, which pulls the moisture to the surface of the garment where the moisture spreads out and evaporates.  Compression fit enhances this feature by its direct contact with perspiration, which is immediately transported away from the skin.  Result:  the wearer stays dry, allowing better regulation of core body temperature.

Compression Fit:

  • Compression fit allows it to interface immediately with all perspiration, regulating your core temperature.
  • Compression enhances proprioception – the body’s recognition of muscle patterns and spatial awareness - increasing efficiency and coordination.
  • Compression speeds muscle-warm up and maintains muscle temperature during breaks.
  • Compression reduces muscle vibration and therefore fatigue, helping maintain power output.

With a fit like a second-skin, compression garments immediately interface with perspiration thereby aiding core temperature regulation.  Compression helps the body recognize muscle patterns and aids spatial awareness which increases efficiency and coordination; it speeds muscle warm-up and helps maintain muscle temperature during break periods; it also reduces muscle vibration, which reduces fatigue and therefore maintains power output.  Result:  the wearer maintains peak performance longer.

ColdGear® Mock Tech Details:

Unique double knit construction—tight knit nylon face for extreme durability and reduced air permeability, twill lofted polyester back moves moisture vertically to the surface of the fabric while trapping body heat.  The result is a thin, warm and dry microclimate next to the skin.  The key to the mock is in its weight and fit—the 7oz fabric retains enough heat to keep the wearer warm, but not overheated during extreme activity. The fit—compression, allows it to interface immediately with all perspiration—it moves moisture immediately off the body.  The result is a warm, dry and comfortable athlete.

Under Armour Basics
  1. Wind resistant - Blocks wind from penetrating to the body. Helps regulate core body temperature.
  2. Windproof - Constructed with a laminate to block out 100% of the wind.
  3. Strategic ventilation - Venting built into the garment at key points where heat accumulates. Keeps you cool in extreme heat.
  4. Moisture transport - Wicks moisture away from the body, keeping you dry.
  5. UPF - Ultraviolet protection that saves your skin from the sun’s harmful rays and inhibits premature aging.
  6. Odor control - Prevents the growth of odor-causing microbes.
  7. Waterproof/breathable - Fully taped to keep out all of the elements, yet allows vapor to escape, keeping you comfortable and dry.

Construction features

Raglan sleeves - Different from typical tee shirt sleeves. Constructed with long, slanting seams that extend from the neckline and continue around the armhole, leaving no shoulder seams. This style gives shirts increased comfort and freedom of movement.

Thermal grid fabric - Constructed with a network of grid channels that trap more air while using less yarn. This makes Under Armour’s base layers incredibly lightweight and quick-drying while keeping your core temperature regulated, enabling maximum performance in a variety of conditions.

Flatlock stitching - Designed to eliminate bulk at the seams of Under Armour tops and bottoms. While regular seams use a “fabric allowance” that creates bulk and can cause chafing and discomfort, flatlock-stitched seams lie flat, resulting in a sleeker look and feel.

  • Who makes ColdGear?
Under Armour Inc. is a Baltimore-based company that manufactures and sells performance athletic apparel designed to wick sweat away from the body. Under Armour gear -- including shirts, jackets, socks, gloves, headwear and cleats -- was orginally marketed to football players, but the distinct Under Armour logo is now sported by athletes in all sports. The company has specific lines aimed at youth athletes and women and also sells light-weight apparel for cold weather known as Under Armour ColdGear. Under Armour was founded in 1996 by Kevin Plank, a former football player for the University of Maryland, who was looking for an alternative to the heavy, sweat-drenched cotton T-shirt he wore under his football jersey. In his first year, 1996, Plank sold about $17,000 worth of items; in 2006, the company's revenue exceeded $467 million. Under Armour gained popularity with a 2002 commercial in which a muscle-bound football player implored teammates to "protect this house!" The catch-phrase became a rallying cry for athletes, including the Baltimore Ravens, and helped propel Under Armour into the big leagues of sportswear sales alongside Nike, Reebok and others. Under Armour became a publicly traded company in 2005 and is listed on the Nasdaq stock market. In 2007, Under Armour opened its first retail store, in Annapolis, Md.
